Yet another commuter/small family car, this time from Toyota: it’s an updated version of the Aygo hatchback and priced at less than R140 000.

Toyota describes the one-litre, five-speed, 51kw/95Nm, A-segment car as stylish, fuel-efficient targeted at “a more expressive customer” looking for a smaller, less-expensive, car than the B-segment Toyota Etios.

Glenn Crompton from Toyota SA marketing, told Carman’s Corner: “The new Aygo combines a distinctive, sporty and unashamedly funky design with a comprehensive specification, great fuel-efficiency (Toyota claims 4.4 litres/100km) and appealing to the young and young-at-heart.”

The Aygo certainly announces its presence in other drivers’ rear-view mirror: it has a prominent “X” design across the grille and extending to the A-pillars (those each side of the windscreen). “Cheeky” is how Toyota describes it…

“Sporty air-intake slats compliment the ‘X’,” Toyota adds, “and angular headlights with projector halogen technology provide excellent road illumination.”

In profile, the rear door sills have an upward flick; the rear side windows retain the car’s pop-out design.

The roof has a “double-bubble”: a dome over each rear seat with a flat section between them to increase rear head room. A large black glass panel replaces the conventional rear the hatch and is framed by “boomerang” tail-lights clusters.

The “X” motif is replicated across the rear of the car with a gloss-black insert.

The Aygo rides on 14” steel rims shod with 165/65 radial tyres – generous for such a small car – though the spare is a “space-saver” biscuit. The car rides 5mm lower than its predecessor and is 25mm longer.

There’s the standard model and two X-play units – identical except for their body colour scheme, silver or black with red or white contrasts.

The Aygo’s engine power peaks at 51kW at 6000rm; maximum torque is 95Nm at 4300rpm, 0-100km/h acceleration is listed as 14.2sec and top speed 160km/h.

Cabin specification is good for a modestly priced small car: headlights levelling, 50/50 split rear seat, gear-change indicator, front and side crash bags, IsoFix child-seat anchors, remote locking, aircon, electric power-steering assistance, audio system, front 12V power socket, immobiliser, Bluetooth, power window lifts, power adjustment for the external mirrors and anti-lock brakes.
