The Clio was launched at the 1990 Paris auto show and, Renault says, eventually became one of the brand’s top-selling models worldwide. It won the European Car of the Year title in 1991. Other awards and successes followed, most recently a place in the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists 2014 Car of the Year awards, won by a Porsche.

For the third year…

The Clio Expression has “a Formula 1 inspired” 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, 88kW/190Nm, turbo engine and a six-speed dual-clutch auto/manual gearbox which can take the car to 100km/h in 9.4sec and on to 199km/h. Combined fuel consumption is listed as 5.2 litres/100km. All pretty good data for a 1.2 engine.

The four-door hatchback comes with a 19cm touchscreen multimedia system with satnav, a leather-covered steering-wheel and gear shifter, aircon, 16″ alloy rims and front fog lights.

The Clio Blaze Limited Edition has a 66kW turbo engine that, Renault says, “allows energetic acceleration from low speeds and avoids excessively frequent gear-changes”. Launch to 100km/h takes 12.2sec and the car can reach 182km/h while (Renault data) achieving 4.5 litres/100km’/h.

The “functional” cabin uses chrome and gloss-black to, Renault says, “make life easier”. The “wing-styled” facia has a central control panel, digital speedometer, height-adjustable driver’s seat (70mm range) and height- and reach-adjustable steering column.

The car has Blaze-specific interior colour detail, leather-clad steering-wheel and gear shifter, exterior Blaze badging and 15” steel wheels with plastic covers.

Here’s how the cars’ technology pans out:

Clio’s MediaNav touchscreen multimedia system, the automaker says, has a wide range of practical functions that includes navigation, audio controls, Bluetooth phone connection, USB and an iPod port.

…and the driving assistance equipment and features

Anti-lock brakes with emergency pressure assistance and electronic pressure distribution
