DUE ON GLOBAL MARKETS IN LATE 2016: It’s the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback, built on the same architecture as the sedan but, in our opinion, much better-looking. Image: Chevrolet US
DETROIT, Michigan – Chevrolet has introduced the 2017 Cruze hatchback ahead of its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The car was, Chev says, developed with all the technologies and dynamic driving attributes of the all-new 2016 Cruze sedan but adds a functional and sporty choice for customers.
ON MARKET TOWARDS END OF ’16
Chev North America says the hatch has the same 2.7m wheelbase as the sedan but includes a unique roof and rear structure with wraparound tail lights and a spoiler above the tail hatch which opens to offer 643 litres of cargo space if the rear seat is in place, 1336 litres if folded.
The car will be available in some markets towards the end of 2016. Chevrolet SA reports that they will arrive as soon as possible after the right-hand drive build commences.

Alan Batey, president of General Motors North America and Global Chevrolet, told Carman’s Corner in a media release: “The Cruze continues to set the tone for Chevrolet globally and articulates the brand’s promise of offering cars with the latest technology, more features and greater efficiency,
performance and safety with fresh, distinctive styling.”
The car, Chevrolet says, has an all-new, more rigid and lighter architecture than previous models and is 91kg lighter than the previous generation –
45kg shave from body mass and 20kg from the engine. The range in North America (it will differ in various global markets) includes L, LS, LT and Premier – and an “expressive” RS package with different front and rear fascias, rocker panels, spoiler, fog lights 18″ wheel rims.
The 2017 Cruze Hatch will be offered in LT and Premier trims, and with the RS package.
Among major features on the coming car are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility through MyLink radio systems and available 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hotspot. Adaptive features include lane-keeping, rear cross-traffic radar, blind-spot alerts and rear parking radar.
HISTORY LESSON: Rise and fall of the Chevrolet Impala
Standard are a 1.4-litre turbo engine with stop/start and electric power-assistance for the steering. Premier models get a Z-link rear suspension and, Chev says, “more rear legroom than a Ford Focus or Hyundai Elantra”.
Options include heating for the steering-wheel and all five seats, leather upholstery and halogen projector-beam headlights with LED signature lighting.
