LONDON, England – The 10th generation of Honda’s Civic, due in showrooms from early 2017, has won its first UK trophy at the July 2016 Auto Express Awards.

The sleek new car took the Design Award, voted for by readers of autoexpress.co.uk, to top the list of 15 competitors.

The car is creating such anticipation that it took almost 20% of the entire vote.

The production version will be officially shown for the first time at the Paris auto show at the end of September 2016 though the concept was unveiled at March’s 2016 Geneva auto show to, Honda says, “critical acclaim”.

The 2017 Civic will be assembled at the brand’s plant in Swindon, England, for export to global markets and, Honda says, the design of the prototype “heralds a significant step-change from previous versions of Honda’s core European model by focusing on provocative design and rewarding driving dynamics”.

The Civic hatchback will be 30mm wider, 20mm lower and 130mm longer than the current generation. “Larger and wider wheels and tyres.” Honda says, “give a feeling of an assured stance. The long wheelbase, short overhangs and sleek cabin area add to the dynamic feel of the exterior.”

The car – possibly depanding on market – will be available with a choice of three power trains: one and 1.5-litre VTEC turbo and “a revised” 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel.

The car will be the first European model to have the two all-new petrol engines.

Phil Webb, head of cars at Honda UK, told The Corner: “At this time in 2015 we were starting to refresh the range. Since then we’ve significantly increased our market share, expanded our offering and started to win awards again.

“This Design Award is all the more significant because it was voted for by readers. It’s a sign of things to come and we expect big things from this car.”
