GT-R Track Edition: One down from the Nismo

TOKYO, Japan – The Nissan GT-R saga continues… here comes the GT-R Track Edition, top dog over the Premium, Prestige and Black Editions but paying homage to the GT-R Nismo.

“As the name implies,” Nissan says, “it’s been engineered for thrill-seeking track enthusiasts by the dedicated team at Nismo, Nissan’s motorsport division.”

It’s meant for buyers who want a way higher level of performance than the standard GT-R and it’s priced at… no, read on…

Performance modifications to further improve the driving experience include Bilstein Damptronic suspension – a race-tuned set-up designed to optimise straight-line and cornering stability – and a new and lighter anti-roll bar has also been added to increase body stiffness and reduce weight.

The car rides on Racing Black, forged, 20″ aluminium rims/tyres as part of the Track Edition package, which also includes a wider front bumper though precise specifications will depend on country. Germany, for instance, will have carbon-framed Recaro seats with a carbon rear spoiler an option.


In the UK, black-and-red Recaro seats will be fitted, the carbon spoiler is standard, but a carbon spoiler and carbon-framed seats are options.

Every unit (international deliveries from November 2016) will, however, have a carbon Track Edition badge attached to its facia.

The Track Edition is based on the 2017 GT-R unveiled at the New York auto show in April 2016 and builds on the GT-R’s supercar heritage, its all-wheel-drive super-coupé features, and a striking new aerodynamic exterior design.

The cabin includes a new 20cm NissanConnect touch-screen infotainment system and an 11-speaker Bose sound system; the drive train uses a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 capable of near-as-darnit 430kW/637Nm, each hand-assembled by a single meticulously-trained technician called a Takumi – ‘master craftsman’.


Since its launch in 2007 (The Corner remembers it well!), the automaker says, “the GT-R has been at the cutting edge of the premium sports-car sector – an uncompromising performance four-seater for enthusiastic drivers, a car which completely embodies Nissan’s brand sign-off – Innovation that Excites”.

Oh yes, sorry, the price… £92 000 in the UK or the equivalent of R1 656 000 (Sept 2016) but there’ll be a serious price penalty in South Africa should the Track Edition arrive, given that current models are priced at:

Premium Edition – R1 950 000
Black Edition – R2 050 000

The 2017 Nissan GT-R was due for release in South Africa in September 2016. The first batch of 27 have been sold but the order book is apparently open.
