WHITLEY, England – The new Land Rover Discovery, its maker says, “embodies Land Rover’s drive to go ‘Above and Beyond’ by combining British desirability with an unstoppable spirit of adventure”.

It’s a three-row, seven-seat, 4×4 SUV “with unbeatable capability and versatility”.

“The Discovery has attraced more than 1.2-million customers over the past 27 years,” Land Rover adds, “and this the fifth-generation model has benefited from the strong, safe and light full-size SUV architecture to deliver comfort and adaptability like no other.”

The new 4×4 will be on display at the 2016 Paris auto show from October 1.

Jaguar Land Rover UK’s managing director Jeremy Hicks told The Corner in a media release: “Demand for the Discovery has always been strong in our home market; this model will build on this by offering the most complete all-round SUV package available anywhere.

“It’s taken everything great about the Discovery – design, versatility, go-anywhere, do-anything credentials and made it better in every way. With the addition of the Ingenium two litre engine looking forward to more fleet and business users.”

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s chief design officer, added: “This Discovery redefines the large SUV. Land Rover’s design and engineering teams have revolutionised its DNA to create a highly desirable, extremely versatile and hugely capable premium SUV.

“We believe the result is a radical departure in design that will introduce the range to a wider customer base.”

Trademark design features include the stepped roof of the previous four Discovery ranges, the automaker said, optimise headroom for the third row of seats. “It also accommodates Discovery’s customary stadium seating – the second and third rows each slightly higher than the one ahead.

The shell is not quite five metres long but those seven seats, Land Rover says, can each accommodate a full-sized adult – while not listing the height of an average adult, however. Each third-row seat has IsoFix child-seat anchors making that five from SE models and buyers can customise from a range of premium materials – among them leather upholstery and oak veneer.

New is that the second and third seat rows can be folded by using controls at the rear of the vehicle, the main touchscreen – even by a smartphone, from inside the furniture store, perhaps, while you are queueing to pay for the new dining-room suite.

All three rows can be specified as heatable and/or ventilated. A ‘massage’ versions can be specced for the front two.

The limited-run ‘First Edition’ model to be on the Land Rover stand in Paris has “the very best of New Discovery”. Only 600 will be available in the UK with exclusive features that include unique etched detailing on the aluminium door and facia trim, unique badges, bold colour choices and a comprehensive list of fitted equipment.

“A ‘dynamic design pack’,” Landy adds, “provides a more purposeful, stealth-like, appearance inside and out with a contrast roof, front and rear bumper designs, leather upholstery and a sport-inspired steering-wheel and pedals.”

A feature first requested by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II to enable dignified ingress/egress while media photographers were around has been extended to the lastest Disco: it drops the vehicle by as much as four centimetres to keep the Royal (and now the public) legs modestly covered.

The 2017 Disco will be powered by Jaguar Land Rover’s range of four- or six-cylinder petrol or diesel engines which will drive a ZF eight-speed auto gearbox. They are:

  • The award-winning twin-turbo Sd4 Ingenium four-cylinder diesel produces 180kW/500Nm and a claimed fuel consumption of 6.5 litres/100km.
  • The six-cylinder diesel from the 193kW/600Nm Td6.
  • Land Rover’s advanced 255kW/450Nm, supercharged, petrol, three-litre Si6 V6 for “relaxed performance and capability”.
