MUNICH, Germany – Six-cylinder in-line engines have been part of BMW automobile history and brand identity for more than 80 years. Come 2017, that won’t have changed…

With the launch in 2010 of the K1600 GT and GTL BMW Motorrad not only skilfully transferred this tradition to its motorcycles but also positioned the result as the lightest and most compact six-cylinder in-line motorcycle engine with a capacity of more than 1000cc.

With the 2017 K1600 GT Motorrad has taken the concept of the six-cylinder high-performance touring bike further to present it in an even more sophisticated, dynamic and comfortable form – unchanged in terms of performance but now meeting the requirements of the EU4 pollutant class.

Outstanding running smoothness and supreme performance from an output of 120kW and 175Nm have been combined with luxurious comfort, virtually perfect wind-and-weather protection and riding dynamics unrivalled in the segment.

“While the 2010 predecessor set riding stability, dynamics and handling standards in the touring segment,” BMW says, “the new K1600 GT goes a step further with electronically controlled suspension Dynamic ESA and its adjustment modes.”

‘Road’ and ‘Dynamic’ modes have, the bikemaker says, significantly enhanced ride comfort; ‘Road’ sets the shock-absorbers to auto for almost all surfaces regardless of load. However, a button on the handlebar will switch – even at speed – the suspension characteristics to ‘Dynamic’ for “tighter” control.

Another ‘bar button will put the bike into reversing mode; assistance comes from the starter motor as the rider holds it down! And then there’s ‘Shift Assistant’ – skip the clutch, just hook the change lever (which works pretty well on my own BMW, as it happens, anyway – Editor).

Yet another (option) button (Intelligent Emergency Call) will summon help. If the motorcycle is involved in a crash/fall/collision the call is activated, automatically or manually, to send the bike’s GPS co-ordinates and set the rescue chain in motion through the nearest BMW Call Centre.

The previous K1600 GT, BMW says, had excellent wind/weather protection but it’s been improved on the new machine through re-designed side trim and larger slipstream deflectors.

“The generally even more dynamic design of the new K1600 GT,” Motorrad adds, “also includes three new colour schemes, each showcasing the character traits of the new performance touring bike.

Red-and-black metallic contrasts with a matte grey frame and gloss-black wheel rims and the platinum metallic matte finish on the engine claims to give the K1600 GT “an air of both refinement and agility while the Sport variant conveys dynamic competence” with blue metallic, black metallic and a black drivetrain shocked by gold brake calipers.
