McLaren leading push for future petrol technology

  • Six partners to join power-train development
  • Target is cuts in carbon dioxide production
  • ‘Exciting project for all our partners’

WOKING, England – McLaren Automotive has announced a strategic project to design and develop technology for the next generation of power trains.

Working with a number of partners, among them the BMW Group, the project intends to develop new combustion technology to deliver more power/cc than currently (Feb 2017) possible while simultaneously reducing carbon dioxide expelled through its vehicles’ exhausts.

The project, supported and part-funded by the British government through the Advanced Propulsion Centre, should also improve the UK’s development and production capabilities of low-CO2 internal combustion engines.


The project will be led by McLaren Automotive but involve six partners – BMW Group, Ricardo, Granger and Worrall for light casting technology, Lentus Composites for its knowledge in specialist composite structures and finally the University of Bath which will bring its advanced research and development capabilities in internal combustion engine efficiency.

McLaren Automotive’s CEO Mike Flewitt, commenting on the collaboration said: ‘This is an exciting project that plays to the strengths of all partners. McLaren Automotive has an exceptional reputation for building the world’s finest engines, as showcased by previous category wins in the International Engine of the Year awards.

“We will continue independently to design and build our own engines but benefits of this project will help us to accelerate the development of our next generation power trains, as confirmed in our recently- announced Track22 business plan.”
