UITENHAGE, Eastern Cape – Volkswagen SA says it is paying homage to its venerable Citi Golf through a limited-edition Citi Vivo – and using the three colours of the original from 1984.

Production at the Uitenhage VW plant of the original Citi Golf ended in 2009 after 25 years during which more than 377 000 – many of them still on the road today (March 2017) – were assembled.

That was also a period of iconic TV and print media advertisements from VW, each of them telling a South African story. Remember this one?

In 2010 VW launched the Polo Vivo to replace the Citi Golf as the market leader in the compact car segment.

Since then the Polo Vivo has been the best-selling car in South Africa – 229 300. During 2016 alone 28 830 hatchbacks and sedans were delivered.

Stefan Mecha, VW SA’s sales and marketing director, told The Corner in a media release: “There is no better way to celebrate the success of the Polo Vivo than paying homage to its predecessor. The three colours are synonymous with the Citi Golf so it was fitting to use them as the only colours for the Citi Vivo.

“It will be a special edition with about 2000 units planned.”

About 70% of its parts are sourced in South Africa, VW said, and the cars also claim the title of “best resale value in its class”.

The Citi Vivo will be based on the 55kW 1.4i Conceptline and its tyres will be wrapped around white 15″ alloy rims similar to those of the original Citi Golf. External mirrors, door and hatch releases will also be white – as will be large CITI decals.

The options list includes cruise control, ultrasonic anti-theft alarm system, front power windows and front fog lights.

The Citi Vivo is available now for R177 300, 23 times the price of the 1984 original – R7635.
