PRETORIA, South Africa – Mazda has added a Mazda2 Individual Plus 1.5 a/t to the 2017 model range, taking the total to seven and adding “enhancements” which also appear in/on the Mazda2 Hazumi 1.5 DE auto.

Individually they are interesting. Taken together they take the modest Mazda to a new level: shark-fin antenna, auto-folding external mirrors, head-up windscreen data display, leather upholstery, side and curtain crash bags, rear parking radar and lane-drifting alert.

The diesel adds blind-spot monitors.

Two new mica exterior colours have joined the model’s palette: blue and crimson. LED-lit front foul-weather lights and cruise control are on the spec sheets along with paddle shifts for the auto models.
Here’s how the ‘advanced safety features list reads – with more detail…

EYE-LEVEL ADJUSTMENT

Head-up display – Individual Plus and Hazumi units only: this windscreen display shows speed, next-turn satnav directions and collision avoidance alerts. The array appears directly in the driver’s line of vision and can be adjusted to suit eye-level.

Lane-drifting alert: Appears on the Individual Plus and Hazumi units: Its value is obvious and such driving aids are pretty much standard across manufacturers to read lane markings and jolt the driver if being inadvertently crossed. The system is disabled if a turn signal in the same direction is flashing.

Blind-spot monitoring – Hazumi only: pulses from each external mirror will detect a vehicle approaching from the rear and alert the driver to the hazard. Handy for protecting motorcyclists, too.
