PRETORIA, South Africa – Automaker Mazda South Africa is recalling as many as 19 000 vehicles across three model ranges as the now years-old Takata crash-bags scandal continues.
Models affected this time are from the Mazda2, Mazda6 and Mazda RX-8 ranges assembled from 2003 with VIN (vehicle identification numbers) starting MM6DE, JM6GG or JMZSE.
The recall is global and follows “investigative recalls” by Mazda Japan and Mazda North America for three types of Takata crash-bag inflators.
‘INAPPROPRIATE CONDITIONS’
However, zero abnormal deployment or dangerous flaws have been reported or found in any Mazda during the recall; the concern has been deemed “an extended formal recall campaign”. Technically, the 2, 6 and RX-8 units are those equipped with a PSDI-4 driver’s-side inflator, SDI-160 driver’s-side inflator or SPI, SDI-230 and PSPI passenger-side inflators.
The recall follows the discovery of inappropriate production conditions and subsequent storage of the inflators’ explosive propellant. Mazda explained that the propellant’s density could be insufficient and cause post-crash deployment with extremely high inner pressure which could rupture the bag.
Rupture, the company said, could cause injury.

Mazda Southern Africa is conducting a procedure to replace the driver’s-side bag and/or passenger-side air bag inflator with an improved unit.
