RENAULT’S DUSTER SUV range has been extended with the addition of an auto gearbox option for the 80kW diesel model.

The automaker says “rugged muscular styling, impressive fuel-consumption, off-road ability, comfort, space, and competitive price” have made the Duster formidable in South Africa’s SUV segment.

The Duster was launched in 2013 and has, Renault says, sold more than 12 000 units “despite a volatile economic climate”.

Until now (July 2017) the Duster has been available with either a 1.6-litre 77kW petrol 4×2 or an 80kW 1.5-litre diesel engine 4×2 or 4×4. Now the diesel is also in showrooms with an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive.

There are also two trim levels – Expression as the entry model, Dynamique for the other four, including the auto which comes with three transmission choices: front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive locked, and auto in which the wheels with the best grip getting the torque.

The SUV’s have 16″ black alloy wheel rims and satin-chrome branded roof rails while convenience features include power window lifts, rear parking radar and cruise control; Dynamique units add a rear camera and 19cm touchscreen with satnav.

Leather upholstery is a R10 000 extra on Dynamique units.

Here’s how Renault describes the SUV: The perfect family vehicle with comfort and convenience standard, ample cabin space and 475 litres of boot space, “substantially more generous than the norm even in higher segments”.

The new auto box is a six-speed unit with two clutches and operates automatically through an electronic control unit. “This ‘dry’ dual clutch system,” Renault says, “combines the comfort of an automatic with the responsiveness of a manual – offering flexibility and fuel efficiency.”

Anti-lock brakes, emergency braking pressure and front crash bags are standard in the diesel units.

Renault claims in its media release: “The Duster is the obvious choice for any individual or family seeking adventure, ticking all the right boxes for drivers with diverse needs while delivering on driving pleasure and absolute peace of mind whatever the road conditions.”
