First images: Chinese Chery picks new global sales model

SHANGHAI, China – Chery has released design sketches of the first of its all-new model line for global markets ahead of the vehicles world premiere at the 2017 Frankfurt International Motor Show on September 12.

These are the first images of the compact SUV.

Ray Bierzynski, Chery R&D Centre Shanghai’s executive vice-president, told Carman’s Corner in a media release: “The world premiere will mark the start of our approach to European sales with a new model line. Launching within a few years, all models in the line-up will have characteristic styling, user-focused technology, electrified powertrains and advanced safety features.”

What the automaker calls “the distinctive form of the all-new compact SUV” is said to flow from Chery’s progressive ‘Life in Motion’ design philosophy, developed by chief designer James Hope.

‘INSPIRED BY NATURE’

“This evolution of Chery’s brand style,” the automaker says, “is intended for forward-thinking and young urban people who choose sophisticated, high quality products.

“Many of the feature lines have been inspired by nature and incorporate ‘hydrodynamic surfacing’ characteristics which convey the pure aesthetic quality of running water. The muscular stance exudes confidence and a sense of stability assured by the wide track and large stylish wheels.”

Chery has produced a distinct “face” for the cars which, it says, features a sharp chromed horizontal brand bar with more chrome trim on the front bumper, sills and window frames.

“Full diode headlights,” Chery adds, “and a neat rear light-cluster complete the car’s dynamic aesthetic.”

Chery is planning to start vehicle sales in Europe within a few years led by the all-new model line for global markets which will focus on SUV and crossover models. Chery is evaluating the sales opportunity in key markets and retail/fleet channels and is planning new design and R&D facilities in Europe.

700 000 SALES IN 2016

Chery claims to be the most successful Chinese vehicle exporter with sales of more than 1.2-million units overseas since 1997 and the first Chinese manufacturer to exceed total sales of more than six million vehicles.

Chery (Group) sold more that 700 000 units thrugh 2016, claiming a year-on-year increase of 28%. Of these, about 100 000 vehicles were exported – almost 30% of all Chinese vehicle exports.
