TOKYO, Japan – Toyota is about to unveil what it calls “a dramatic open-top sport car concept”, said to have been inspired by the company’s involvement in endurance racing and its legendary Supra and Toyota Sports 800.

What? No mention of the GT-R…?

The world premiere of the matte-black GR HV Sport concept will be a highlight of the October 2017 Tokyo auto show at which it will share the stage with the Toyota Tj Cruiser – “a showcase model for a new vehicle genre” says Toyota – by combining the flexibility of an SUV with the storage capacity of a van.

Meanwhile, the GR HV has been designed to promote the fun of driving by combining the thrill of a sport car, a wind-in-the-hair “targa top” and Toyota’s latest motorsport-developed hybrid technology.

DIODE HEADLIGHTS

“Its swoopy design and racing-inspired hybrid powertrain,” Toyota says, “remind of the Toyota Gazoo Racing TS050 Hybrid that competes in the World Endurance championship.

“Its diode-lit headlights, five-bolt wheels and rear diffuser evoke the components used on the hybrid-powered hybrid racer.”

GR are the initials of Toyota’s motorsport arm Gazoo Racing, HV stands for hybrid vehicle – the concept using a racing version of hybrid technology refined by the TS050.

To enhance dynamic performance, the concept has a front-engine / rear-drive layout with the hybrid battery mounted centrally for optimal front / rear balance and a low centre of gravity.

Toyota says it embodies the functionality of a sport car, including push-button ignition (it’s on the auto gear-shifter). Six-speed manual operation is , however, available at the press of a button and also uses the H-pattern shifter.

FRONT ENGINE, REAR DRIVE

Toyota has already revealed a motorsport-inspired hybrid sport-car concept, the FT-HS (Future Toyota Hybrid Sports) that was a star of the 2008 Melbourne auto show.

The automaker also envisages a front-engine, rear-drive, set-up with revolutionary hybrid acceleration and optimal performance with a projected 0-100km/h time of around four seconds.
