- Japanese automaker’s second Festival win
- Prestige accolade for second time in three years
- Four-door shell embodies design – and history
PARIS, France – Mazda’s Vision Coupe has won the title Most Beautiful Concept Car of the Year at the 2018 International Automobile Festival here in the French capital.
It was the 33rd such event and the award comes only three months after the car was unveiled in Tokyo.
Mazda’s global design director Ikuo Maeda and his design team were there to accept the prize.
The jury – among them automobile and motorsport experts, renowned architects, and fashion designers – chose the car over nine other models nominated for the award.
It was Mazda’s second win in the event: the brand captured the same award two years earlier for its RX-Vision concept.
The automaker says that, as the name suggests, the Vision Coupe ‘’embodies Mazda’s next-generation design’’. ‘’The proportions of the flowing four-door, with the cabin towards the rear, are characteristic of a classic coupé yet convey the powerful forward momentum of a high-performance sport car’’.
SECOND HONOUR ‘GRATIFYING
Maeda, his official title managing executive officer in charge of design and brand style, said after receiving the award: “This coupe uses reflections to express a sense of vitality it was the next step for Kodo which embodies a delicate Japanese aesthetic.
‘’To be recognised here in the ‘City of Art’ two years after the RX-Vision was awarded the same honour is very gratifying. We want to retain our identity as a Japanese brand as we continue making cars with global appeal.”
Mazda describes the exterior’s simple “one-motion” form as expressing ‘’a formidable sense of speed’’. The cabn is said to have borrowed a concept from traditional Japanese architecture ‘’to create three-dimensional depth conducive to a relaxed space’’.
‘’Finally,’’ Maeda said, ‘’the name pays homage to the company’s more than 50 years of elegant coupés such as the Mazda Luce Rotary, also known as the Mazda R130.’’
