GENEVA, Switzerland – Toyota has revived the name and spirit of its most celebrated sport car with confirmation of production to start on a new generation of the legendary Supra. LEGENDARY SUPRA REBORN: Image: Toyota / Motorpress

The Supra nameplate is front and centre at the 2018 Geneva auto show for the world premiere of the Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept.

The compact two-door concept – engine up front, rear-wheel-drive – is said to show the potential for a fun-to-drive car that can deliver great performance on road and track.

The concept, Toyota says, carries a huge visual clue to its return: the large ’90’ on its doors is the code name for the fifth-generation Supra which follows the A40, A60, A70 and A80 series assembled from 1978 to 2002.

DRAMATIC BODYWORK

Toyota explained that the reveal was intended to show the brand has a new global focus on using motorsport, and the Gazoo Racing brand, to accelerate the development of production models.

The concept’s dramatic bodywork uses lots of strong, but light, composites for elements such as the front and rear bumpers, front splitter and rear diffuser, skirts, external mirror housings and the large rear wing – as well as the bonnet.

The windscreen and windows are plastic.

The car rides on BBS centre-nut racing rims Michelin racing tyres, the brakes Brembo Racing callipers and discs, and there’s a racing exhaust system.

The driver-only cabin has a racing dashboard, OMP five-point crash restraint, and an OMP quick-release steering-wheel, the wheel mounted on a racing column and equipped with paddle-shifts.

More crash-survival gear includes a full roll-cage and fire extinguishers, and the fuel and brake lines, pedal box, battery and wiring looms are all designed to competition standard.

The GR in the name comes from Toyota Gazoo Racing, the international umbrella for Toyota’s global motorsport programme – including the Dakar Rally for which Toyota SA produces the bakkies.

CELICA STARTED IT ALL

The Supra badge first appeared in 1978 on an enlarged and and more powerful version of the second generation Celica before becoming established as a successful model in its own right.

The GR Supra Racing Concept will feature in an April 2018 update for the Gran Turismo Sport video game developed by Polyphony Digital, part of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe.
