NEW YORK – Maserati has today (March 29 2018), at the New York auto show, revealed the first Levante to have a V8 engine. It’s the Levante Trofeo, described by the Italian automaker as ”the ultimate Maserati of SUV’s”.

Acceleration is listed as 0-100km/h in 3.9sec and top speed beyond 300km/h

The Trofeo totes one of the most powerful engines yet in a Maserati – a 3.8-litre twin-turbo passing 440kW / 730Nm  to ”intelligent” all-wheel drive and delivered at, respectively, 6250 and from 2250-5000rpm. It will be assembled by Ferrari in Maranello, Italy.

Maserati CEO Tim Kuniskis. told The Corner in a media release: “It’s proof that when you play with the elements you end up in a storm. The Trofeo’s engineers and designers in Modena (also Italy) knew that the driveline parameters were more than able to cope with additional power – they also knew Maserati had access to the finest engines on earth.

”So, they were up to the challenge of making the finest and fastest luxury SUV.” Big claims, indeed…

Anyways, this ”unmistakable” Levante design is said to have reached new levels of sportiness with elegant restyling was focused on the lower front facia and the rear bumper, emphasised by 22” forged aluminium wheels – the largest yet on a Maserati – available in either polished or matt finishes.

The side air intakes are defined by aerodynamic wings which, Maserati says, ”give a sense of further stability, visually pushing the weight of the car’s nose towards the massive front wheels”.

The cars will also have carbon-fibre side bezel blades and a carbon-fibre splitter.

The tail also looks wider and also has a carbon-fibre horizontal element and body-colour lower extractor around the oval quad exhaust tips.

NEW BONNET, TWO VENTS

Diode headlights, a piano-black grille with double vertical bars and lower honeycomb facia, as well as body-colour door releases, dark oval exhaust tips and painted brake calipers  – chose red, blue, black, silver, or yellow.

The bonnet is new and has two vents. Below it is a glossy carbon-fibre engine cover with a V8 inscription and trade-mark Trident logo. The cylinder heads and intake manifolds are red.

Interior designers, Naserati says, have come up with elegant ways to create a distinctive cabin environment: ”The sculpted sport seats have a premium full-grain Pieno Fiore leather in black, red or tan, each with contrast stitching and a Trofeo logo stitched on the head restraints.

Maserati says the leather unlike any other leather used in the automotive industry  thanks to its natural and soft feel and for the character it develops through wear.

New matt carbon-fibre trim and paddle-shifts, specific instrument graphics, mats with metal Trofeo badges and a Maserati clock with an ”elegant” dial elegantly underline, Maserati says, ”the exclusive sporty character of this extraordinary Levante”.

There’s also a 1280W, 17-speaker, Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system.

Production of the Levante Trofeo will start (probably) in June 2018 at the refurbished Maserati plant in Mirafiori (Turin), Italy. It will initially be  intended for export. (Check with your local  Maserati dealer to see when stock is expected / can be ordered or scroll down on the same site.)

POWER UNDER CONTROL

Maserati engineers developed the V8 engine to matche the AWD, which meant a new crankcase design, specific crankshaft assembly, new oil pump and auxiliary belt, and  changes to the wiring. The turbos deliver high flow, the re-designed cylinder heads, camshafts, and valves, different pistons and new connecting rods allow maximum power thanks to specific engine calibration mapping.

The Levante Trofeo is one of the fastest SUVs ýet and has a top speed in excess of 300km/h; 0-100km/h takes 3.9sec from which it can stop (depending on road surface) in about 35 metres.

There’s a new Corsa Driving mode which handles launch control as well as the current Normal, I.C.E., Sport and Off-Road. The system also, Maserati says, improves engine response, opens exhaust valves under acceleration, and provides faster gearshifts.

FIRST CONTROL SYSTEM

Lowered air-suspension, sportier Skyhook shock-absorbers the AWD work with traction control.

A Maserati vehicle control system has been installed into a Levante for the first time. It’s intended to provide ”impressive driving dynamics, better performance and a genuine Maserati driving experience” by controlling vehicles stability” instead of correcting driving errors”.

To introduce the cars at the New York auto show Maserati is showcasing a limited Levante Trofeo ”launch edition” (that’s it in the feature’s images). The show car is finished in matt Grigio Lava paint with matt-finished 22” wheel rimss and red brake calipers.

Unfortunately (or fortunately if you live in the Americas) the limited series Trofeo is only for a few customers in the US and Canada. It will be available across The Pond in eight unique body colours and a choice of wheel-rim sizes and tyres.
