LONDON, England – Performance car enthusiasts can look forward to even greater performance and more dynamic design as the new Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy joins the Renault Sport line-up.

The car debuts a more powerful version of the 1.8-litre turbo engine – 220kW for the first time in an R.S model – and 420Nm largely through pioneering technology. This new engine can be combined with a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Together with the new power unit, a host of additional performance-focused features differentiate the Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy from the standard Mégane R.S.

Its Cup chassis, with a stiffer suspension and a Torsen mechanical limited-slip differential, has bi-material front brake discs, 19’‘Jerez alloy rims and high-performance Bridgestone tyres.

ALL-WHEEL STEERING

Also exclusive to this Trophy are (option) Recaro front seats upholstered with Alcantara and riding 20mm lower than standard; it’s finished in the Liquid Yellow synonymous with Trophy models and has Trophy stripes on its F1-style front spoiler.

The Mégane R.S all-wheel steering system is present and there are four bump-stop shock-absorbers yet, though ”honed for track use and to fulfil the needs of enthusiasts”, the car is suited to everyday use with:

  • The ability to select driving mode with a Multi-Sense system
  • Exceptional R.S. Vision headlights
  • Telemetry and data acquisition system through an R.S. Monitor

Nico Hülkenberg, Renault Sport F1 driver and Renault Sport ambassador, told The Corner in its media release: “I’ve been involved in the Mégane R.S. development process since 2017 and I’m pleased to see this even sportier version added to the family.

”Each of the new features offers more sports performance and feel… it’s obviously positive to have more power and better grip but I also enjoyed the support of the new seats.”

The ceramic ball-bearing has been introduced because the car’s turbocharger rotates at close to 200 000rpm. Ceramics are harder and smoother than steel so reduce friction by 33% over a ball-bearing system with an oil film.

”This,” Renault says, ”ensures that the turbo is able to spool quicker, aiding acceleration and responsiveness.”

A new exhaust system, Renault says, is the second area in which engine performance has been improved: the rear silencer has a mechanical valve that enables engine noise to be adjusted – a first in the R.S. range.

Two tones are generated, depending on engine speed and load.

The position of the valve, automatically controlled according to the Multi-Sense mode selected, the engine speed and load, provides two tones.

LIGHT RIMS, FAT TYRES

Like New Mégane R.S., the Trophy will be available with either a six-speed manual or EDC gearbox. Shift paddles exist on the steering-wheel. With the EDC gearbox, maximum torque has increased to 420Nm through re-mapping.

The car’s Cup chassis has a torque-sensing mechanical limited-slip differential calibrated for entry to corners and better traction when exiting as well as 25% firmer shock-absorbers, 30% tighter springs, and 10% stiffer anti-roll bars.

The front brakes have bi-material 355mm discs, said to be not only lighter by 1.8kg per wheel but also faster heat dissipation. The 19” Jerez alloy wheels rims are shod with 245/35 Bridgestone Potenza S001 tyres though, by 2019, 2kg-lighter 19” Fuji rims will be available.

The car’s all-wheel steering is said to deliver outstanding agility through tight turns and impressive cornering stability.

The Liquid Yellow colour is standard but the full range of Mégane R.S. body colours is available.

…AND A LITTLE HISTORY

The first Mégane R.S. Trophy appeared in 2005, nine months after the first Mégane II R.S. went on sale. The modifications were focused on the chassis, called Sport2. Lighter wheels, stiffer springs, specific shock-absorber stops and ESP that could be inhibited all helped to improve performances.

A 265 Trophy version of Mégane III R.S. was introduced in 2011, also based on the Cup chassis but with an upgraded engine whose performance made it the quickest front-wheel drive production model on the market – even setting a lap record of 8min07.97 on the Nordschleife – and sales were double those forecast.
