Toyota Aygo: ‘Rejuvenated’ for 2018 – and lower fuel burn

  • Another generation of sporty small Toyota
  • Better headlights, still single-piece seats

JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – A second-generation of the Toyota Aygo was launched back in 2015 with a strong “X”-motif across its grille and similar themes through the passenger space.

Now, the automaker says, the cars have emerged with a fresh design that continues the original “X”-motif but with a rejuvenated appearance.

Most obvious are larger projector headlight assemblies which also house diode daytime lights, bringing the units on parity with its larger C-HR sibling.

The five-door shell has an upswept rear window-line and sloping roof thought the rear design focuses on new light elements. A large, blacked-out tail hatch and lower bumpers keep the “X”-theme in sight

TOUCHSCREEN AUDIO

The cabin has moulded one-piece front bucket seats, multi-tone upholstery, orange illumination and leather-trimmed steering-wheel and gear-shifter.

Standard across the range are a touchscreen audio system with USB, auxiliary and Bluetooth, steering-wheel control and a trip data computer. The audio system can also handle smartphone connectivity through a USB port.

Power window lifts, remote central locking, power-adjustable external mirrors, air-conditioning and a 12-volt accessory connector are also present.

The stacked instrument cluster carries a circular info display within the speedometer and a tachometer and shift indicator flank the multi-dimensional gauge layout.

MORE ENGINE POWER

Every Aygo has stability control, hill-start assistance, anti-lock brakes and emergency braking pressure. That’s the crash prevention stuff but should that not be enough cabin protection includes front and side crash-bags, IsoFix child-seat anchors and pre-tensioning three-point seat belts.

Power comes from a 998cc, three-cylinder, now making a marginally more powerful 53kW / 93Nm despite which Toyota says fuel-consumption has been reduced to 4.3 litres/100km.

There are three models… the basic Aygo, Toyota says, has ”solid peace-of-mind motoring” for budget-conscious buyers.
