PARIS, France – Renault’s distinctive new C-segment crossover will be badged as the Renault Arkana and unveiled at the 2018 Moscow international auto show on August 29.

The Corner thinks the name is bizarre – it means ‘secret’ or ‘mysterious’, its root, according to Renault, the Latin word ‘arcanus’.  but first recorded in English in 1547 as ‘arcane’… ”for centuries to mark events and phenomena of special significance”.

OK. we get that, but it also means ”obscure” – the last thing an automaker would want for a product –

Renault adds that Arkana is associatd with mystery, attractiveness and – wait for it – ”pioneering spirit”. So, a special relationship with South Africa, then – perhaps here it should be badged Afriarkana?
