MILAN, Italy – Piaggio will start production of its Vespa Elettrica scooter  in September (2018) at its Pontedera plant near Pisa, Italy, from where the first Vespa (Italian for Wasp) left the lines in early 1946.

The brand now claims to be one of the world’s technological leaders in terms of design, development, and ”advanced mobility solutions”.

The scoot-maker is promising innovative all-inclusive finance to join conventional purchase systems  in line with the high-end bracket of the 2018 Vespa range.

Vespa Elettrica will reach global markets from the end of October 2018 to reach full marketing in November to coincide with the 2018 Milan EICMA show. Sales will begin in Europe then be extended to the US and Asia in early 2019.

We’ve asked Vespa South Africa if the silent machines will be available in SA.

MEET ROBOT GITA…

Piaggio Group says the Elettrica is a first step towards ”a new richness of interconnection between vehicles and human” and will be equipped with solutions being developed for Gita, a robot on the drawing board at Piaggio Fast Forward in Boston (which will be entering production at the beginning of 2019), such as artificial intelligence adaptive and responsive to human input.

The scoots, it’s claimed, will be aware of people and other vehicles in its vicinity to extend the operator’s ability to sense potential perils and opportunities and to provide mapping and traffic data.

Which, for a scooter declared to the silent, will be a good thing on crowded city streets…

”Most of all,” the scootmaker says, ”these new-generation vehicles will thoroughly know their operators without key fobs, anticipate their driving choices, interact with other devices and vehicles, and allow personalisation ”that can barely be imagined today”.

‘RIDING EASILY, NATURALLY’

”By adopting electric drive,” Vespa says, ”we once again become a symbol of style combined with the best of innovation.

”Vespa Elettrica means riding easy, natural. It means advanced connectivity and silence, personalisation and accessibility, values that have always belonged to Vespa and that today have been totally achieved in Vespa Elettrica.”

More than 1.5-million Vespae have been delivered in the past 10 years and the first half of 2018 saw a 10% increase over the same period a year earlier.
