- Bush-beating Cruiser still seven-seater
- Desert-busting diesel V8, auto transmission
- Large SUV, genuine off-road prowess
JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – Toyota believes its Land Cruiser 200 station-wagon is still ”the unquestionable conqueror of the African landscape”. The Corner might disagree by suggesting the ox-wagon was first, but what the heck?
It’s still a big seven-seater SUV with off-road incredible credentials, rugged ladder-frame chassis, and a robust V8 diesel engine and goes by the tell-it-all tag of ”the Cruiser” in 4×4 circles.
No argument that Toyota believes it’s a key player in the large-SUV market segment.
The big and expensive all-terrainers have been known to sell an average of 100 units a month; certainly, as Toyota says, ”the Land Cruiser 200 has found favour with South Africans who want a large SUV with genuine off-road prowess”.
”Now, near the end of 2018,” Toyota says, ”the pinnacle of the Land Cruiser family tree has been given some subtle tweaks, staying true to the proven formula.”
TWO GRADES, ONE A GX-R
The utility-focused entry model has been re-badged GX-R (GX of old) to align the naming convention with its luxurious VX-R sibling.
Each, however, is moved by a 4.5-litre V8 turbodiesel engine capable of 195kW at 3400rpm and 650Nm from 1600-2600 rpm.
…AND THE VX-R
Notable changes to the VX-R are at the front of the vehicle: a new grille design includes two prominent horizontal slats replacing the previous multi-slat design.
The diode-lit head- and foul-weather lights now have smoked glass; the headlights have auto high/low-beam amps and LED fog lamps, for enhanced visual differentiation. The headlamps and are flanked by daytime running lights.
Brown is a new cabin-trim colour to join beige and black.
The VX-R model continues with an impressive standard specification list:
Leather cabin upholstery
Power-adjustable front seats
Ventilated front seats, heatable front and middle row
Satnav and touchscreen infotainment
Multi-terrain selectable driving modes
Automatic traction control and ‘crawl control’
Full suite of electronic driving aids, 10 crash bags
