MEXICO CITY, Mexico – Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton celebrated his fifth Formula 1 World championship on Sunday (Oct 29 2018) to match those of three other greats after Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the Mexican GP a second consecutive time.
Hamilton matched the five titles of late 1950’s Argentine great Juan Manuel Fangio; his target now will be the seven of German Michael Schumacher. The Briton had needed only fourth to end the challenge from Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel who finished second.
Hamilton had needed only five points to take the title; four times champion Vettel needed to win to have any hope of another title. Hamilton said on Sky Sports TV: ”It’s something I’d dreamed of but never thought I’d stand here a five-times champion.
Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen was third, so the Constructors’ championship has not yet been won – though that could happen at the 2018 Brazilian GP in November.
