PRETORIA, South Africa – Ford SA has introduced a new version of its Tourneo Custom with, it says, ”an extensively revised and more premium interior” and a re-designed nose with a five-bar chromed grille.
The eight-seat van is seen by Ford as targeting executive shuttle operators and ”lifestyle” customers. The Corner would add its for hotel and even game-park transfers.
Ford SA’s marketing manager Doreen Mashinini told The Corner the Tourneo had been ”comprehensively re-engineered to provide superior levels of refinement and sophistication, including high-quality trim, comfort and noise insulation”.
She added in a media release: ”It’s been refreshed with new exterior styling and an interior that combines the comfort and quality of a luxury car with outstanding space and practicality.”
The Tourneo Custom mimics Ford’s latest car with its trapezoidal grille and , slim headlights. Each also has new daytime lights, auto headlights, and front foul-weather lights.
The seats’ design and assembly have, Ford says, ”been re-visited” with revised foam padding and the vehicles’ aircon chilling/warming accelerated.
There are eight seats – two up front and two rows of three behind. They can be folded flat, tumbled, stowed in multiple positions or removed completely, enabling customers to create limousine-like space or maximise cargo/luggage volume.
Perhaps Ford might consider making the second row reversible so passengers can face each other to chat as they travel…?
Standard across the range are stability control, hill-start assistance (we’d ask if a licensed driver should have mastered this skill?), load compensation and trailer-sway correction.
Front, side and curtain crash bags and IsoFix child-seat anchors are standard, the latter for the second row of seats – the safest in either a front or rear crash or shunt.
Also standard are a six-speaker Bluetooth audio system, USB and auxiliary input ports. Each can be controlled through steering-wheel buttons.
The Tourneo Custom is powered by a choice of two of Ford’s 2.2-litre four-cylinder, turbo-diesel engines – a 74kW/310Nm or a 92kW/150Nm. The entry model Ambiente has the 74kW, the Trend the 92kW.
The Tourneo Custom can tow a 750kg unbraked or 100kg braked trailer.
