LONDON, England – Former Ferrari F1 driver Michael Schumacher’s son – also Michael, but known by the diminutive Mick – has contracted to join the Italian racing team’s driver academy.
The 19-year-old will race in Formula 2 through 2019 after winning the 2018 European F3 championship.
Ferrari said in a statement on Saturday the youngster would join other members of the academy in pre-season preparation, listed by Reuters as Giuliano Alesi (son of Jean, a Ferrari F1 driver), Britain’s Callum Ilott, New Zealander Marcus Armstrong, Russian Robert Shwartzman and Brazilians Enzo Fittipaldi (grandson of double F1 champion Emerson) and Gianluca Petecof.

Schumacher snr had his 50th birthday in January 2019 but hasn’t been seen in public since he incurred serious head injuries in a skiing fall in France five years ago.
The Ferrari academy has produced several F1 drivers, among them Charles Leclerc who will race for Ferrari through 2019 with four times World champion Sebastian Vettel.
