JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – In the 40 years since first unit was delivered – and a new era in motoring was born – more than 350 000 VW Golfs have been sold.
Since the launch of the seventh generation in 2013 the Golf GTI, GTD and R models have made upmore than 45% of all Golf sales in South Africa.
Now VW has added 15kW to the Gen.7 R performance derivative to take it to 228kW/400Nm and make it the most powerful production Golf yet as sold by VW SA.
It also has top-dog crash-prevention/avoidance goodies: blind-spot monitor, reversing alert, following cruise control and self-braking in an emergency.
There are three 19” wheel choices, and infotainment systems such as the optional 23cm Discover Pro with gesture control.
The hotter R will be come in red, white, blue or grey metallic, black, or a special blue metallic but the important bit is the engine: the 2.0 TSI can make 100km/h in 4.6sec thanks to a fast seven-speed cogbox and ”launch control”.
So, really, it ain’t the driver after all, it’s the car…
