WOKING, England – Carlos Sainz wants to be McLaren’s lead drivers for 2019 as he replaces fellow Spaniard Fernando Alonso’s at the Formula 1 team.
Reuters reports that the 24-year-old Spaniard joined from Renault (he was there on loan from Red Bull) in a new line-up with 19-year-old British rookie Lando Norris.
Sainz has a motorsport heritage ( his father is ex-World Rally champion Carlos) and will begin his fifth F1 season.
TROUBLE WITH PACE
“There’s no pressure, really,” he told reporters at the launch of McLaren’s new MCL34 car recently. ”This year we will not be fighting for World titles,… it’s not the same situation as Fernando maybe back in the day.
McLaren last won in 2012 and in recent season has been well off the pace.
Nevertheless, Sainz jnr told Reuters: ”I like what I see, the way the restructuring has gone. We’re ready to go racing.”
