Gone in 60 seconds: BMW, Merc, Landies top targets

LONDON, England -The Tracker 2018 table of the Top 10 Most Stolen and Recovered Vehicles puts BMW’s X5 in the top spot for the UK from second through 2017.

The X5 has been thieves most popular vehicle eight times through the past nine years – Mercedes’ C-Class took pole in 2017 but was back to second in 2018.

Recovery company Tracker told The Corner in a media release that the number of ”keyless cars” stolen is increasing though 88% of stolen vehicles fitted with such such a device were recovered in 2018.


Such thefts increased from 80% in 2017 but, Tracker said, ”a more significant and worrying increase than the 22% of 2016.

In 2018, prestige brands reigned supreme, with BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover and Range Rover were top of the pops with thieves – one or other took all top 10 places.

The BMW 3 Series has moved from fifth to third, pushing the Range Rover Sport down from third in 2017 to eighth. The Range Rover Vogue re-appeared after dropping out of the table in 2017. The Land Rover Discovery was a new entry in 2018 – seventh most popular.

”Prestige” brands remain top targets, the average value of stolen and recovered cars in 2018 was £20,000. The least expensive was a Toyota Landcruiser worth only £1000, the most expensive a £120 000 Rolls Royce Ghost.


Clive Wain, head of police liaison at Tracker, told The Corner: “Organised criminal gangs make a living out of stealing to order or taking what they know will sell quickly.

”It’s a thriving profession. What’s more, thieves have sophisticated skills that continually adapt to counter security technology, but the opportunist thief will take any vehicle.

“Thanks to our relationship with all UK police forces about 80 suspects were arrested and 79 other stolen vehicles were found alongside those fitted with a Tracker unit.”
