BARCELONA, Spain – Formula 1 fired up its final four-day pre-season test on Tuesday (Feb 26 2019) with McLaren’s British teenager Lando Norris fastest and Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly close.
Mercedes, the pundits says, is still bluffing by tootling around the Spanish track.
Alfa Romeo’s Italian Antonio Giovinazzi had been fastest (1min18.589) before lunch Alfa but Norris (19) copped a 1min17.709 in the afternoon sunshine. The McLaren did, however have to stop twice on the track with an hydraulics issue.
Canadian Lance Stroll was third for Racing Point ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton seemed to be there just for a drive in the sunshine – he was second slowest, behind team-mate Valtteri Bottas. Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg was slowest.
Gasly, on 136, put in the most laps of any driver and set his quickest lap on harder tyres than Norris: team principal Christian Horner said it had been a very productive day on the Circuit de Catalunya.
