‘Foreign object’ caused Vettel’s Barcelona crash

BARCELONA (Reuters) – A wheel rim issue caused Sebastian Vettel’s crash during pre-season testing in Spain on Wednesday. The four-times World champion was not hurt.

His Ferrari left the Circuit de Catalunya track – the first problem with the car that, the team said, ”otherwise looked impressively quick and reliable”.

A team announcement said: ”Thorough checks showed Seb’s off was a rim issue. The rim was damaged a few seconds earlier by an impact with a foreign object.”

Charles Leclerc was testing another car on Thursday with four-times

World champion Vettel, who was not hurt in Wednesday’s incident. There will be more testing today.

The first race of the 2019 season will – as always – be in Australia on March 17.
