JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – Toyota has at last seen sense and swapped its Auris badging to return to the much-loved (in South Africa at least) Corolla moniker – yay!
The sedan version of the Corolla – along with its also popular Conquest hatchback – so popular in the 1980s and ’90’s – has a new hatchback design (sedans are fading from wish-lists around the world).
Toyota SA says the new Corolla is longer, lower and consequently sleeker, than its Auris predecessor and points out a ”striking nose” with diode headlights, daytime running lights and a flatter clam shell bonnet above a narrow upper grille.
The tail is described as ”more rounded than before” with ”muscular haunches” punctured by all-diode rear light clusters. All models, Toyota says, will have a roof spoiler and a stubby shark-fin antenna. Six exterior colours will include red, bronze and blue.
The cabin is described by Toyota as ”spacious, modern and cohesive” with new textures, colours and trim. ”The slim instrument panel,” the automaker adds, ”is not only key to a sense of space but also improves the view through the windscreen.
The high-grade Xr models will come with Alcantara upholstery over wide shoulder supports and thick side bolsters. The rear seats can be folded to create a full flat load volume.
The cars’ shell is said to be 60% torsionally stiffer and lighter than early similar models. Handling stability, steering response and ride comfort are said to be ”notably” improved thanks in part to a new design of shock-absorber.
Motive power? That, Toyota says, comes from a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, turbopetrol engine capable of 85kW/185Nm – the latter from 1500-4000rpm through either a six-speed manual or a new 10-speed sequential auto gearbox, first capable of taking the car from 0-100km/h in 9.5sec, the CVT in 10.4.
Fuel consumption for each is listed as 6.1 litres/100km.
Crash protection stuff includes seven crash bags, stability control, anti-lock brakes and child-seat anchors.
