INGOLSTADT, Germany – The same capacity for blistering pace and unshakable cornering confidence that has characterised Audi compact class performance hatchbacks bearing the ‘S’ logo for almost two decades can now also be savoured in the Q2 SUV.
The new SQ2 brings 300PS, quattro drive, and a sub-five-second sprint time to bear in the lead-in Audi SUV range and is now available to order in the UK priced from £36 800 (about R700 000 – March 2019).
As is customary for an Audi ‘S’ performance variant, the exterior of the new SQ2 has been subtly but effectively uprated: there’s a redesigned front bumper, a front splitter runs almost the entire width of the car and is flanked by two large air intakes.
The single-frame radiator grille contains eight upright double bars divided by horizontal struts and an SQ2 logo; the C-pillar blades are ”titanium grey”.
DIAMOND CUT RIMS
A silver rear diffuser has been moulded around the S-specific dual-branch tailpipes.
Completing what Audi describes as ”a bespoke look” are aluminium-effect external mirror housings; ‘V-spoked’ 18” alloy rims carry 235/40 tyres and the 340mm front brakes have black or red calipers with S logos. Gloss white 19” alloys with five double spokes and diamond cut finish or 19” five-arm’ Audi Sport wheels in gloss black can be specified.
There’s also an ”exterior pack” to replace the radiator grille surround, tail pipes, C-pillar blades, door mirror housings and rear diffuser, a larger rear spoiler, and diamond-cut grey 19” rims.
NAPPA LEATHER SEATS
A distinctive ”interior pack” can be chosen instead of the standard interior spec that already includes dual-zone climate control, an extended leather pack, a 3.5” colour driver’s information system, and a flat-bottomed, S multi-function, steering-wheel, .
It includes black and red nappa leather front sport seats with contrasting stitching as an alternative to the standard leather/Alcantara, an LED interior lighting pack, front mats with an SQ2 logo, and red air vents.
There are a number of alternative ”pack” – but get the full details from your local Audi dealer.
More important is the two-litre turbo engine and the seven-speed S tronic gearbox that together can make 100km/h in 4.8sec and 250km/h. All-wheel drive is standard in the SQ2 though it has the ability to shunt some or all power to either axle.
Also standard is an S sport suspension that has dropped the shell by 20mm.
”In terms of practicality,” Audi says, ”the SQ2 offers the same interior space as other Q2 quattro units along with a split-folding 60:40 rear seat. A removable and lockable towball can also be separately specified.”
The car is available in the UK priced, as a guide, from £36 800 (about R700 000.)
