VW Superbug racers heading into their last track season

HERNDON, Virginia – The Volkswagen Beetle Supercar (above) will return to competition through 2019 in the second season of the Americas Rallycross series but the last of its racing as the model is phased out.

Two Beetle supercars will be entered under the Andretti Rallycross banner, with support from Volkswagen R, Volkswagen’s performance division.

The season will open over the weekend of June 8/9 on the Mid-Ohio Sport Car Course with its new 1.12km circuit. The series will continue through northern states and into Canada and Texas and back in Ohio for the final.

VW R’s US managind director Jost Capito told The Corner in a media release: “It’s great that the Beetles will be back on the ARX circuits through 2019 year – a fitting send-off for the iconic Beetle now that production is coming to an end.

” ‘Affordable performance’ is a pillar of our brand and the reason why VW R is proudly supporting Andretti Rallycross.”

The team will continue to race the Beetle Rallycross vehicles assembled in Europe and developed by Andretti Rallycross in the US. The cars will race with the same two-litre 420kW turbocharged engines that propelled the team to success in 2017 and 2018.
