CAR AWARDS TREBLE FOR JAGUAR: Image: Jaguar Land RoverNEW YORK – The all-electric Jaguar I-Pace has completed an historic treble at the 2019 World Car Awards: not only has it won the 2019 World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year titles – equalling the success of the F-Pace in 2017 – but also the World Green Car title.

I-Pace is the first vehicle to have won three World Car titles in the 15-year history of the awards.

This latest win was revealed at the 2019 New York international auto show on the votes cast by a panel of 86 motoring journalists from 24 countries. It follow just a few weeks after it won the European Car of Year title, and so, the automaker says, ”affirms its status as the world’s most desirable premium electric vehicle”.

Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover’s chief executive officer, told The Corner in a media release: “It’s an honour that the Jaguar I-Pace has received these three accolades. We started with an ideal – a ‘Destination Zero’ vision for zero emissions, zero accidents and zero congestion.

”The I-Pace is our first step towards achieving this and it was conceived when EVs were little more than a niche choice. So we started from a clean sheet to create a benchmark – the world’s best premium electric vehicle, a true Jaguar driver’s car.

“For I-Pace to be awarded all three titles gives our first all-electric vehicle the recognition it deserves. Thank-you to the team which created the  I-Pace for their passion in making it so outstanding.”

The cars were developed in the UK. To date (March 2019) more than 11 000 have been delivered in more than 60 countries – including South Africa. Its combination of sport-car performance, zero emissions, exceptional refinement, and SUV practicality have, J:LR says, ”made it the stand-out choice in its segment”.

Design director Ian Callum accepted this the latest award. He said: “Designing Jaguar cars is probably the best job in the world, but no other project has been as rewarding as the  I-Pace. Electric vehicles offer designers unprecedented freedom to re-think the proportions, profile and packaging – team exploited that to the full.”

The i-Pace has a 90kWh lithium-ion battery and can reach a range of 470km. Recharging to 80% can be done in 70 minutes on a fast charger, overnight from a home wallbox.

The I-Pace has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. ”The shell,” JLR says, ”provides high levels of occupant protection and is complemented by technology intended to protect other road-users and pedestrians with autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian/cyclist detection.”

The cars have received 62 awards since early 2018, among them European Car of the Year, German, Norwegian and UK Car of the Year, BBC TopGear magazine EV of the Year, China Green Car of the Year, and Autobest’s EcoBest Award.
