DEARBORN, Michigan – If you’re lucky enough to be driving your own latest Ford Mustang here in South Africa take heart that on the Mustang’s 55th anniversary people like you are celebrating the world’s best-selling sport coupe for the fourth consecutive year.
”From Australia to Peru,” Ford US says, ”the 2018 Mustang reigns sales supreme with 113 066 sales for that year, according to data from IHS Markit. That makes it four years in a row of global leadership as not only the world’s best-selling sport coupe but also as best-selling sport car in the United States where Ford sold 75 842 units.”
Ford’s Pony Car also continues to be one of the best-selling sport cars in South Africa at 2615 since it went on sale here in 2016.

Jim Farley, Ford’s global markets boss, explained: “We broke the mo8uld when Ford launched the Mustang 55 years ago. Nothing says freedom, the wind in your hair, and the joy of driving like a Mustang. It’s an icon.
”The roar of its V8 on a spring day… there’s nothing better. No wonder it’s the most popular sport coupe in the world.”

The Mustang was available in in 146 markets in 2018, based on worldwide Ford sales data. More than 500 000 sixth-generation units have been sold worldwide since 2015, with the car picking up an additional half-point of global share in 2018 to capture 15.4% of the segment – fuelled in part by the new Mustang Bullitt, which exceeded global sales forecasts by 25%.
Global sales data are based on IHS Markit 2018 total new vehicle registrations for all sport car segments. US sales are based on 2018’s industry-reported sales.
