Gem of an Escort for sale: One owner, R1.5-million…

WARLEY, England – If bling is more your thing than driving then this is the perfect car for you. It’ll never be roadworthy but this Ford Escort is worth a fortune….

It’s a one-off, 1:25 scale, model made of silver, gold and diamonds.

The project was a 25-year labour of love by professional jeweller and petrolhead Russell Lord, owner over the years of 55 full-size Ford Escorts. He says he’s poured thousands of hours into assembling the car.

The body, brakes, and spoiler are silver, the wheels and bonnet hinges  18-carat gold. The grille is 18-carat white gold, the headlights diamond, the turn indicators orange sapphire, the brake lights rubies.

‘IT WAS A HOBBY’

Lord explained: ”It’s been a hobby to which I have returned time and time again but, three years ago, I becae determined to finish it. There there were no plans – I just built it piece-by-piece.:

The original was a works rally Escort Mk2 car driven by Ari Vatanen in the late 1970’s. The rally car might have been expensive but the model is in another car-park: the materials cost £78 000 (close to R1.5-million), the labour has not been calculated.

THE PULLEYS EVEN SPIN…!

Now that it is finished the model will be auctioned on the car auction website www.themarket.co.uk on May 2, the bid payment will go to charities.

Details include spinning pulleys on the front of the engine, a moving diamond-encrusted platinum gear stick, and glass windows made from dozens of glass vases to find the precise curves require.
