Spirit of Africa’s back and looking for drivers

  • Testing time for best teams from Botswana, Namibia, South Africa
    More than 400 teams will compete in 2019 competition
    Finalists with challenge for International Spirit of Amarok title

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – From April 262019 non-professional 4×4 drivers in Southern Africa will have a chance to prove their precision driving skills in the local leg of the Spirit of Africa competition.

The prize? The top teams will represent their countries at the 2019 International Spirit of Amarok competition.  

The challenge was created a decade ago by rally legend Sarel van der Merwe but hosted by VW Commercial Vehicles. Any two-person team from Southern Africa can vile for a spot during the 21 gruelling elimination rounds.


The eliminations will be staged near Nelspruit based on a series of challenges the includes speed and technical driving tests and the successful pairs will take on competitors from Australia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Taiwan, China and Russia using Amarok 165kW V6 3.0 TDI 4×4 units.
