BARCELONA, Spain – Lewis Hamilton will be the favourite to win the 2019 Spanish Formula 1 GP here on Sunday… a race he’s won four times, including a hat-trick.
Some fans also reckon he will regain the 2019 F1 championship lead from team mate Valtteri Bottas – a mere one point scored for a fastest practice lap a few races earlier.
However, Reuters reports, Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc showed best during pre-season testing at the Catalunya circuit and some even say Ferrari can end Mercedes’ five-year F1 stranglehold.
VETTEL: ‘WE’RE NOT FAVOURITES’
An interesting view, given that so far this season Mercedes has had four consecutive 1-2 finishes though Ferrari is due for an engine upgrade and is bringing them in two races before due date.
Reuters certainly believes the Italians need to step up a gear and start turning things around ”or the writing will be on the wall”.
Ferrari’s Vettel, Reuters reports, says: ”We’re not the favourites going to Barcelona.”
His team boss, Mattia Binotto agreed: “Mercedes is very strong. I’m pretty sure they will be very strong this weekend. However, many teams will have aero package or car developments so there will be a different balance.”
Mercedes’ principal Toto Wolff dismissed Ferarri’s claim: ”The results seem to paint a relatively clear picture but the truth is they’re too flattering. Their performance has fluctuated in the first four races.
- British bookmakers William Hill have Hamilton as race favourite at 6-4, Bottas 9-4 and Vettel and Leclerc at 9-2.
