THE NEXT generation of the now ageing Mazda3 is expected in South Africa fairly soon but meanwhile the cars have been awarded the maximum five-star rating by Euro NCAP.
Sister ship the Mazda6 has already achieved an overall five-star rating under the new, more stringent, 2018 Euro NCAP crash-protection ratings.
”The 2019 Mazda3 performed impressively in all four Euro NCAP test categories,” the South African arm told The Corner in a media release. ”that included the Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, pedestrian safety, and Safety Assist.
”This may be attributed to three key factors: the adoption of the very latest Skyactiv vehicle architecture that includes a very rigid, light, but impact-absorbing, shell, and an extended range of advanced crash-protection technology to help drivers identify risks and reduce the likelihood of damage or injury, and lastly better pedestrian protection.”
The cars scored 98% for Adult Occupant protection and maximum points for frontal full-width impact, other car, and pole side impacts while emergency braking pressure also took full marks in low speed tests.
PEDESTRIAN PROTECTION
The ”excellent” Child Occupant score includes maximum points for child protection during dynamic tests, both frontal and lateral impact and pedestrian safety tests garnered maximum points for leg and pelvis area protection and the Safety Assist category score was a demonstration of the new Mazda3’s ”comprehensive” suite of safety features.

”By making the car easier to drive safely,”Mazda says, ”such attributes further reduce the potential for accidents without compromising the car’s fun-to-drive character.”
