Iconic Kombi gets more power to celebrate sixth decade

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -VW Commercial Vehicles has expanded its minibus range with a Trendline Plus version of its Kombi 2.0 BiTDI 132kW DSG.

Until now the only version was a 2.0 132kW DSG diesel bi-turbo version but in Comfortline trim.

VW’s Kombi has been the best-selling T-series derivative for six decades though local production stopped way back in 2002 but since the local introduction of the sixth-generation Kombi in 2015 almost 5000 have been delivered in South Africa.

ALLOY RIMS, PARKING RADAR

Mark Handley, head of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, explained: that the restructured Kombi range was now available as:

2.0 TDI 75kW Trendline standard or long-wheelbase
2.0 TDI 103kW DSG Trendline and Trendline Plus
2.0 BiTDI 132kW DSG Trendline Plus
2.0 BiTDI 132kW DSG Comfortline (all prices below)

Standard exterior features of the Kombi Trendline Plus include
17” alloy wheel rims, diode head- and tail-lights, headlight range control, parking radar front and rear, reversing monitor and a fixed towball.

Customising can add power-folding external mirrors, a comfort package, and a ”light and sight package”. (No, ask your dealer…)

Interior highlights include a multi-function steering-wheel, multi-function display, radio with AppConnect and six speakers, adjustable driver’s arm rests, easy-to-clean rubber floor lining, and cruise control.

Further options include carpeting, leather-look upholstery, front passenger seat with armrest, and side and curtain crash-bags for front and rear passengers.

Crash avoidance/mitigation equipment includes post-collision braking, driver alert, foul-weather lights with (option) integrated cornering lights and a rear-view camera.

The two-litre bi-turbo engine’s can make 132kW at 4000rpm and maximum torque of 400Nm from only 1500rpm, Top speed is listed as 190km/h.

Each will be delivered with a three-year or 120 000km manufacturer’s warranty and a five-year or 60 000km maintenance plan requiring a dealer service every 15 000km,
