- All-electric crossover ‘new direction’
- Two motors, powerful acceleration
- ‘Next stage of Nissan evolution’
TOKYO, Japan – Nissan has unveiled its Ariya Concept, described by its maker as ”a crossover electric SUV with two electric motors, powerful acceleration, award-winning driving assistance technology and a look that signals a complete reinvention of the brand’s design”, at the 46th Tokyo auto show.
It’s said by Nissan to signal the dawn of a new era for the automaker as it ”embarks to redefine its brand philosophy for the next evolutionary phase of the automobile”.
The Ariya, displayed as a concept model, has a ”premium” cabin outfitted with high-tech features inside a shell that obviously houses an electric car – few frills, smooth layout.
The Ariya Concept expands on design elements first shown by the Nissan IMx concept presented at the 2017 Tokyo show. ”They include,” Nissa says, ”the bold electrified V-motion signature ‘shield’ (the new name for what used to be a radiator grille) and striking rear blade light cluster and short overhangs.
Yasuhiro Yamauchi, representative executive officer with Nissan Motor, told The Corner in a media release: “The Ariya is a strong collaboration between design and engineering – the next stage of Nissan’s design language and evolution.”
The Ariya, Nissan says, has taken a new design direction for the brand. Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s senior VP for global design, explained: “With this vehicle and the IMk concept, we wanted to ensure that the soul of every Nissan car has a distinctive Japanese DNA.
“We replaced the conventional grille with what we call a ‘shield’ – it’s also a radar sensor and carries other technology that help the Ariya to read the road and to visualise things the driver cannot see.”
Highlighting the vehicle’s profile are five-blade, 21”, aluminium wheel rims with custom tyres and a one-piece light blade with blacked-out lenses runs the width of the body.

Albaisa again: “The exterior balances dynamic beauty with proportions that show what’s possible with Nissan’s 100% electric platform. The short overhangs, large cabin, large wheels and tailored two-tone paint provide an elegant appearance that balances sport and luxury.”
The paint job carries large embedded glass flakes that produced billions of light refractions, he adds… ”reminiscent of a comet crossing the night sky”.
The ”high-performance”, 100% electric drive system is said to deliver instant torque to all four wheels from a dual front/rear drive configuration said to produce balanced and predictable power ”equal or better than many premium sport cars”.
Power storage management allows long-distance driving (distance unspecified) and, destination reached, the driver can use a smartphone or dedicated device to park the car automatically.
When parked at office or home, the Ariya will support Nissan Energy technology which allows connection with energy systems to charge the EV battery, power homes and businesses, and even sell energy back to the power grid.
