JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – The Hyundai Atos is back in South Africa with a new, modern look and styling, impressive standard features, and performance that, its maker says, ”promises to make this entry-level model a top-seller”. Especially at their prices… more later.
The small cars are said to be assembled on an all-new platform, one larger than its predecessor with a spacious cabin, sporty ride and handling, and doing it all quietly. Hyundai, not surprisingly, says the new Atos has credentials that put it at the top of a family’s wheels shopping list.
The new Atos,we’re told, has a frugal, free-revving, four-cylinder, 1086cc engine that can deliver excellent fuel consumption – and the brand has one of the best guarantees and service plans of any SA automaker.
Stanley Anderson, sales and operations director at Hyundai Automotive SA, told The Corner: “Our previous Atos sold 45 092 units in South Africa and – together with the Tucson and Getz – helped to cement our brand as trustworthy, with a long road life.
“We decided, after thorough local testing , that the new Atos can again compete successfully in the tough SA entry-level car market which we expect will grow substantially because of the tough financial situations with which so many South African families must contend.”
SENSE IN A TOUGH MARKET
Then, of course, there is the price: R159 900. And Hyundai says its 50kW / 99Nm compares very favourably competitors: fuel consumption is listed as 5. 7 litres/100km, tested on a ”real world” cycle.
”Its dimensions and ground clearance,” Hyundai says, ”are on par with rivals, but it is the whole package with a complete list of features that the Atos offers at a most competitive price.
Its looks, the company says, follow the modern “tall boy” design which provides good head- and legroom.
The list of standard features includes:
An infotainment system with a 19cm touchscreen, Apple Carplay, and Bluetooth connectivity
Trip data computer
Multifunction steering-wheel with remote buttons for the radio, audio system, and Bluetooth phone connection
A dedicated USB charging socket that also serves as a connection point for Apple’s Carplay and as an extra 12V power socket
Power for front windows
Stylish comfortable seats with durable upholstery
Two front crash mitigation bags
Anti-lock brakes for safer wet-road emergency braking
Child-seat anchor points for the rear seats
…and, perhaps most important of all, a seven-year or 200 000km warranty that, the automaker says, supports the trust Hyundai has in the quality and build of the Atos. A 12-month service plan and roadside assistance for seven years or 150 000km are also part of the package.
The Atos is offered in yellow, white, grey, red, blue or silver and services are required every 15 000km or annually.
