JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng – Hyundai SA has launched the brand’s latest smaller (A-segment) SUV with features already in use on its larger on/off-road models as launched earlier in 2019 in the US.
The brand’s media info reports a ”bold and unique character that’s big on practicality and personality” despite being ”a unique, entry-level vehicle for people seeking savvy design and abundant safety, convenience and connectivity features”.
Stanley Anderson, Hyundai Automotive SA’s ultra-amiable sales and operations director, told The Corner: “The Venue is a small but exceptional SUV withg a powerful and very efficient turbocharged engine, outstanding comfort, and many safety features.
”Our Creta mid-sized SUV has shown good design, quality build, and practical features and the Venue is poised to repeat that.”
There are three spec levels, each with electronic stability control:
Motion – entry-level
Fluid, with more design and convenience features
Glide, with a comprehensive list of features
and the cascading grille incorporates Hyundai’s signature face found on the Kona and Santa Fe SUV’s and each unit can take 16” alloy wheel rims as standard on the Fluid and Glide versions, and 15” steel rims for the Motion.
Interior/luggage space allows a practical boot, along with a 60/40 folding rear seat on Glide units. The cargo column can be shielded by a cover. The leather-wrapped steering-wheel carries audio controls and – Fluid and Glide – cruise control buttons.
CHILLED GLOVE BOX
The infotainment system has either a 3.8” mono LCD display (Motion), or a 20cm touchscreen / rearview camera (Fluid and Glide) which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to handle app-based navigation, streaming audio, and voice-controlled searching.
Glove-box cooling, rear aircon, and auto cruise control are added to the convenience features in Fluid and Glide.
Standard crash mitigation features include six deceleration bags for Fluid and Glide, seat-belt pre-tensioners, IsoFix child-seat anchors and anti-lock brakes. Motion units come with a deceleration bag for driver and front passenger and all have stability control, auto braking balance and hill-start assistance.
Hyundai’s three-cylinder turbocharged Kappa one-litre diesel engine can delivers 88kW at 6000rpm and 172Nm from in a 1500 to 4000rpm. The engine can be hooked to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed auto transmission in the Motion and Fluid while the Glide derivative only uses the auto.
