JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – The Lexus design team had a daunting challenge from its Mahogany Row: create the world’s most beautiful open-top car that preserves the essential styling of the brand’s award-winning LC coupe.
Lexus will introduce the LC 500 Convertible in 2021 for the South African market, so read on…
The roof, the company says, was key to the goal. Chief designer Tadao Mori explained: “Few convertibles are stylish and elegant when the roof is open of closed. We put maximum effort into realising the same beautiful roof line for the LC Convertible as for the coupe.”
The cover is set as low as possible, Lexus says, and the belt line kicks up behind the doors ”with the intention of creating an overall tight and clean profile”.
The folding roof has an extra fold in the soft top to fit in the space between the rear suspension towers, creating a character line running from the front to the back.

As the cabin is more open to passing eyes, Lexus used innovative colour co-ordination to enhance car’s special character and design.
”Two soft-top colours will be available,” Lexus says. ”Beige and black. Interior options will allow buyers to specify a car that captures their personal style.”
Co-ordinating the A-pillar trim with the colour of the roof lining is a design feature that, Lexus adds, applies across the LC range. ”The co-ordination is all the more stylish in the LC Convertible as the pillars are in clear view whil ethe roof is lowered so accentuates the luxurious quality of the interior.”
The upholstery has a quilting pattern in the shoulder section of the front seats and perforations with three different diameters – the intention being to progressively fade into distance..
The LC 500 Convertible will have a naturally aspirated five-litre V8 capable of 351kW / 540Nm and drive through a DirectShift-10 auto transmission.
Prices closer to the 2021 launch date – that is still to be announced.
