Mégane RS Trophy in SA: Filling ‘the need for speed’

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Renault SA now has access to the 2020 Mégane R.S. 300 Trophy – the French automaker’s performance hatchback said to be the brand’s ”ultimate fusion of exceptional design and heart-racing performance”.

The Corner told you about it and other new Mégane models back in February 2020.

”Those with the ‘need for speed’,” Renault says, ”can look forward to an all-round performance car that combines everyday driveability with even sharper on-track performance that comes with a number of Renault Sport features.”

The package includes Trophy insignia, a distinctive Sport front bumper with an F1 ”blade”, a model-specific rear diffuser, a central exhaust and what Renault calls ”unique Jerez Triple Tone” 19” wheel rims.

The cabin has unique Recaro Alcantara upholstery featuring red top-stitching and a Zamac aluminium gear-shifter and handbrake lever.

There’s a choice of two gearboxes – manual or dual-clutch electronic – but one supermotor – a more powerful version of the previous 1.8-litre turbo engine pumped up to deliver 221kW.

Other additions include ”engaging technology” such as an R.S. Monitor and Race Mode for an “augmented” driving experience, bi-material Brembo brakes with red callipers, and – working within a stiffer suspension with a Torsen mechanical limited-slip differential – all-wheels steering called 4Control.

When you’d rather listen to music than hear the car working there’s a multimedia system controlled through a 20cm touchscreen and including satnav, Bluetooth, USB and AUX supported by Apple Car Play and Android Auto.

Other when-you’re-cruising equipment includes dual-zone aircon, cruise control with speed limiter, Renault hands-free card, and automatic lights and wipers.

Externally, the R.S. 300 Trophy has an F1-style splitter and rear diffuser and Jerez Triple Tone 19″ red wheel rims shod with Bridgestone Potenza S001 tyres. Internally you’ll find height-adjustable Recaro bucket seats and a tracking system (”playful yet ingenious”, says Renault) to monitor engine performance, and Race Telemetry to monitor on-track stats.
