Mitsubishi Xpander range widening to include SA?

TOKYO, Japan – Mitsubishi Motors has introduced an all-new Xpander Cross wagon in Vietnam after launch events in Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand but it’s apparently on its way to South Africa.

The Cross is the top variant of the Mitsubishi Xpander range which, we’re told, became the best-selling small multi-purpose vehicle in Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam in 2019.

Since its Indonesian launch in 2017 total sales of the Xpander series had grown to 260 000 by June 2020. The addition of the vehicle will, the local operation says, strengthen Mitsubishi’s competitiveness in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance.

Nic Campbell, Mitsubishi Motors SA’s general manager, told The Corner in a media release: “We’re investigating the Xpander Cross for South Africa for a wider range of customers seeking style, ruggedness and practicality.

“The vehicle has been named Car of the Year, Best of the Best MPV, and Best of Small MPV ranges, in Indonesia and can align with our lifestyle vision for MMSA.”

The Cross is said to align with the unique strengths of an MPV and to have robust SUV exterior styling, comfortable and pleasant drivability, and a practical but also versatile interior.

”With its best-in-class ground clearance of 225mm,” mitsubishi says, ”this crossover allows users to drive over a wide range of terrain with confidence.”

Sales of the standard Mitsubishi Xpander started in October 2018 and by June 2020 about 27 000 had been delivered.

Nic Campbell added: “The addition of the Xpander Cross to our range will bring new experiences for dynamic and energetic customers in South Africa.”
