VW’s Amarok – ‘the Wolf’ – now bites with a new V6

• VW launching its most powerful Amarok yet
• 190kW three-litre V6 turbodiesel superbakkie
• Big luxury truck ‘a best-selling derivative’

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – When the last quarter of 2020 arrives (and the Christmas sleigh is nigh!) Volkswagen’s automobile showrooms will have a big new brute on its showroom floor – its most powerful bakkie yet.

It’s the Amarok double-cab and it packs 190kW of V6 power – which puts it among the most powerful bakkies in South Africa.

The Amarok range, launched in South Africa in 2010, has sold almost 35 000 units (single- and double-cab) into the SA market. The double-cab, at 2596, was VW Commercial’s best-seller.

BIGGEST CHANGE

So, which models…? From November 2020 the Amarok – in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana – will be offered with a 2.0 TDI 103kW, 2.0 BiTDI 132kW, or new 3.0 TDI V6 190kW engine

Indeed, the new diesel is the biggest change to the range with its extra 25kW/30Nm boost over the outgoing 165kW units. (And, back in 2010 when I attended the launch of the Amarok in South Africa, the VW bigwigs said categorically there would be no three-litre versions – it finally arrived in 2018…

‘I, AMAROK!’: VW has at last conceded, 10 years after its launch in South Africa, that a three-litre engine is a good idea. Image: VW SA

Here’s how the engine shapes up: the 190kW is valid from 3000-4500rpm, the 580Nm from 1400-2750rpm, all delivered through a standard eight-speed autobox.

Such clout will haul the big five-seater bakkie to 100km/h in 7.6sec and on to 207km/h. Average fuel consumption is rated as 9.5 litres/100km – but wait, there’s more…

There’s an over-boost that can take maximum power to 200kW for a maximum of 10 seconds, it is also one of the most powerful bakkies on sale in South Africa at the moment.

BIGGER LEAFS, XENON HEADLIGHTS

The new V6 will be available in Highline and top-of-the-range Extreme spex with a bodyshell colour choice of white, beige, grey metallic and black pearlescent.

Highline spec mean being furnished with leather heatable upholstery and gross vehicle mass has grown from 2.8t to 3.0t (partly because of the introduction of heavy-duty leaf springs), bi-xenon headlights, font and rear parking radar/camera, aircon, and 18” alloy wheel rims.

Want more? Options on the Highline include a media system that includes satnav, rubber floor covering, and 19” alloy rims (all of the above also available for the Extreme units which can also mount ‘Special Edition’ Nappa leather upholstery, the media system, and 20” alloy rims as standard.

Optins on the Extreme can include the heavier leaf springs, flooring, 19” rims and a body-colour sport bar.
