JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – With 261 285 sold since its market introduction in March 2010 the Volkswagen Polo Vivo hatch has, for the past decade, been the best-selling car in South Africa. Now its been given an indigenous touch..
The Vivo, as the only SA-assembled model in the competitive A0 segment, has been a dominant brand in the entry-level hatch segment despite competitors’ frequent model launches, VW SA says. Key product attributes such as price, German build quality, safety, space, and comfort ”have a set an unparalleled benchmark in the segment”.
”The cost of ownership over three years,” the automaker says, ”makes it one of the most affordable cars in the South African market.”

Now VW SA has updated the Vivo range with ”a stylish special edition”.
Mike Glendinning, marketing director for VW Group SA, explained: “The Polo Vivo Mswenko, based on the 1.4-litre, 63kW, Comfortline manual, is a fashion-inspired derivative with unique styling details that we believe will appeal to dynamic and young-at-heart customers.”
Mswenko (pronounced m-swe-nkoh) is a Zulu expression for the slang word “swag” – an expression of attitude and confidence. ”A self-confident and stylish person is said to have swag,” VW says. ”Mswenko, unique to South Africa, refers to a person’s style, attitude and general demeanour.”

The Mswenko is easily recognised by Mswenko door decals, a chromed exhaust tip, 16” alloy wheel rims, a black roof, privacy glass and a colour choice for its external mirrors.
The cabin differs from the rest of the range by having blue seats, black headlining, silver-coloured fascia inserts, six speakers, and leather on the multi-function steering-wheel and the gearshifter.
