STUTTGART, Germany – Mercedes-Benz has designed and created a collection of automobile seats for children of various ages intended to mitigate injury, particularly for a side-impact, while ”offering maximum comfort for the little ones”.
The automaker, in co-operation with Britax Römer, has developed the crash protection seats for various ages and ”optimum safety and seated comfort” yet taken time to match them to its existing car interiors – particularly, the company says, for AMG-badged vehicles.
Which includes transverse quilting and use of the standard AMG seat cover Dinamica microfibre. Vital, too, is that the seats have been tested at ”a 50% greater energy input than they are ever likely to experience”.
The Baby-Safe Plus II rear-facing seat is the right choice for the age group birth to 15 months and a body weight of up to 13kg; a deep cradle with high softly padded side and shoulder bolsters and a head restraint adjustable in seven stages. It can also be reclined.
The five-point belt system with central longitudinal adjustment holds the child in place and the seat can be easily lifted from the vehicle using a one-handed carry handle. A sun and wind shade provides ideal protection in the open air and the seat can be rocked on its curved base.
The seat, intended to be anchored by a three-point seat belt. also has what Merc calls a D-SIP system to maximise side-impact protection and an automatic child seat recognition system that uses a transponder to automatically deactivate the front passenger crash-mitigation bag. The belt tensioner and all other bags on the front passenger side remain active.
The padded seat cover is removable, washable, and matches Mercedes colours.
The front-facing DUO Plus seat is suitable for children aged nine months and 3.5 years and weighing from nine to 18kg. It also has Mercedes’ design in black and light grey, with grey stitching and high-quality embossing.
STILL GOOD FOR AGE 12

The largest seat in the range is the KidFix XP (xtra protection) to carry youngsters weighing from 3.5-36kg and up to 12 years old. Deep and well‑padded bolsters, Mercedes says, ”ensure the best-possible side-impact protection. The head restraint and belting are height-adjustable and the whole assembly can be adapted for sitting or sleeping.
The V-shaped backrest provides the best fit throughout the child’s development and can be removed once the child reaches about 22kg. The KidFox XP should be attached to the host car’s IsoFix or i-Size anchors or three-point seat belts.
The identically constructed AMG KidFix XP adds a sporty design inspired by the seat design of a Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door Coupé and,Mercedes says, ”follows the design lines and has a colour scheme that blends into the AMG interior.
‘JOIN THE FAST FAMILIES’
Red top-stitching and side bolsters included and the backrest has mesh inserts with red stitching to match AMG Performance seats.
