Base Ford Ranger gets boost with sport pack

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Ford’s Ranger XL, the least expensive model in the bakkie range in South Africa, is now available with a sport pack that includes black 17” alloy wheel-rims, a shiny black grille, and ”sport” bar, and access steps.

Optional is a 20cm touchscreen for Apple CarPlay/Android Auto on all Ranger XL single-cab, SuperCab and double-cab units.

Doreen Mashinini, Ford SA’s marketing manager, told The Corner: “The Ranger XL is our value-orientated offering for a wide variety of applications… single-cab with its spacious load box, SuperCab with extra space behind the front seats, and the Double Cab that’s suted to business or family use.

Sport Pack units can be identified by their gloss-black grille, wheel and tyre choice with the standard 16” silver alloy rims are upgraded to 17-inch Panther gloss-black with 265/65 R17 tyres.

There’s also a rear tubular sport bar and a black rear bumper; buyers can also specify dealer-fitted black side steps.

Connectivity and in-car entertainment can also be upgraded with Ford’s optional touchscreen infotainment system to replace the entry-level SYNC1 unit and its 10cm LCD display. That means a 20cm colour touchscreen in conjunction with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto to access Waze navigation.

It also supports phone calls from a Bluetooth-connected device, text-to-speech for messages, and wifi hotspot compatibility. Two USB slots provide additional multimedia connection options.

Though an entry model, the XL also has anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, and load/trailer sway control and the all-wheel drive bakkies have a diff-lock and towball.

Front crash-mitigation bags are in all units; child-seat anchors are in double-cabs along with remote central locking, immobiliser and theft alarm.

Motive power comes from a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder, turbodiesel engine capable of 118kW/385Nm from 1500-2 500rpm.

The XL Sport Pack adds R16,500 to the base price, the 20cm touchscreen infotainment system and dealer-fitted side steps R6080 and R5050 respectively.

All units will be delivered with a four-year or 120 000km* comprehensive warranty, three-year/unlimited distance roadside assistance, and five-year/unlimited km corrosion warranty.

A six-year or 90 000km* service plan is included which covers six services. Service intervals 15 000km or annually*

*Whichever comes first.
